MYOPIA MANAGEMENT

Controlling Nearsightedness in Children

What is Myopia (Nearsightedness)?

Myopia, also called nearsightedness, is an eye condition where objects at near are clear but objects far away are blurred. It is caused by the eye being slightly too long.

What is myopia?

Myopia is becoming increasingly common, particularly among children, and can progress quickly. Myopia in kids tends to progress throughout childhood, and higher levels of myopia are associated with higher eye disease risks in adulthood. If your child already wears glasses, you can do something to stop their vision from worsening.

There are different severity of myopia:

  • Mild myopia: -0.25 to -3.00 D

  • Moderate myopia: -3.25 to -6.00 D

  • High myopia: -6.00 or higher

Mild myopia typically has a much lower risk for developing eye diseases. But moderate and high myopia are associated with serious and sometimes vision-threatening complications.

Myopia management prevents risks of several eye diseases:

  • Cataracts – Higher the myopia, the faster cataracts can develop when kids get older

  • Glaucoma – High pressure in the eye can cause irreversible damage to the optic nerve. Studies show that nearsighted people have a 2-3 x greater risk for developing glaucoma.

  • Retinal detachment

While there is no cure for myopia, there are treatments available to help slow its progression.

Myopia management may include these or some combination of these:

  • Atropine eye drops

  • Orthokeratology (“ortho-k”)

  • Peripheral defocus multifocal contact lenses

MiSight 1 Day Myopia Control Contact Lenses
MiSight 1 day contact lenses

The MiSight daily disposable lenses are therapeutic contact lenses that are clinically proven and FDA approved to slow the progression of myopia. Children, ages 8-12 years old, showed a 59% reduction in the worsening of their vision compared to those that did not wear MiSight lenses

Why choose MiSight?

  • MiSight 1 day is the first and only contact lens FDA-approved to slow the progression of myopia in children age 8-12 at initiation of treatment.

  • 59% reduction in myopia progression with MiSight 1 day lenses.

  • Slowed the rate at which the eye lengthens at 52%

  • children can insert the soft, daily wear, single use contact lenses in their eyes in the morning, wear them for at least 10 hours during the day then dispose them in the evening.

  • MiSight contact lenses provide children with significantly better quality of life than children wearing glasses, especially regarding athletics and appearance.

  • Allows you to avoid the worry of losing or breaking glasses.

How does it work?

The ActivControl™ technology in MiSight® 1 day uses vision correction zones and treatment zones within the lenses to slow axial elongation. By including both types of zones in the lens, it simultaneously corrects the child’s vision today, while creating myopic defocus in all gazes.

The correction zones allow for clear vision throughout the day, while the treatment zones discourage abnormal elongation of the eye.

Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology (Ortho-k) lenses, which are customized contact lens molds, are worn each night and removed each morning. The molding that occurs overnight allows for clear vision at all distances during the day without glasses or daytime contact lenses. The lenses are comfortable and do not interfere with sleep. They last approximately a year and are worn as long as myopia progression is considered a risk or until freedom from daytime lens correction is no longer desired.

Atropine Eye Drops

Atropine eye drops are placed in the eye once daily and treatment is continued as long as myopia progression is considered a risk. Studies show that daily use of a low dose of atropine can slow the progression of myopia. Atropine eye drops dilate the pupil which prevents the eye from being able to focus, which allows the mechanism to relax.
